Fixing Toner and Drum Cartridge Errors on Xerox Printers

Xerox devices, like other laser printers, separate toner and drum components with independent life counters, which often confuses which part actually needs replacing.

Symptoms to look for

  • Cartridge not recognized error after installing supplies
  • Print quality issues despite a recently replaced cartridge
  • Conflicting messages about toner versus drum status

What causes it

Using non-Xerox-certified supplies that lack proper chip communication, or installing a cartridge meant for a different but similar WorkCentre model, are frequent causes.

How to fix it

  1. Confirm the cartridge or drum part number matches your exact device model.
  2. Remove and firmly reseat the component, checking for full contact with internal connectors.
  3. Power cycle the device after reseating.
  4. Check the device's supply status page to see toner and drum levels independently.
  5. If using third-party supplies, verify explicit compatibility with your WorkCentre/VersaLink model before replacing again.
Technician's tip

Print quality problems after a cartridge swap are more often a drum issue than toner — check the drum's separate life counter before assuming the new toner is faulty.
