Recovering From a Failed HP Firmware Update
A failed update can leave a printer in a partially updated state where it won't respond normally — but it's usually recoverable without a replacement.
Symptoms to look for
Printer screen frozen on an update or loading logo
Printer unresponsive to any panel buttons after an update
Repeated 'update failed' messages on retry
What causes it
Interrupted power or WiFi during the update process is the most common cause, followed by attempting an update while low on paper or ink, which some models block mid-process.
How to fix it
Unplug the printer directly from the wall for 60 seconds (don't just power it off).
Plug it back in and wait several minutes without pressing anything.
If it boots normally, retry the update from a stable WiFi connection.
Ensure paper and ink are sufficiently stocked before retrying.
If the printer remains unresponsive after two attempts, a technician can force a firmware recovery.
Technician's tip
Never unplug a printer mid-update unless it's been frozen for more than 10 minutes — give it time first, as some updates simply run long.
