Fixing HP's 'Cartridge Not Recognized' Message

This message doesn't always mean the cartridge is faulty. Contact chips, packaging tape, and firmware checks are behind the large majority of cases we see.

Symptoms to look for

  • Error appears immediately after installing a new cartridge
  • Error appears with a cartridge that worked previously
  • Print jobs blocked entirely until the error clears

What causes it

A thin plastic seal left on the contacts, dust on the printer's internal contacts, or a firmware update that tightened cartridge verification are the most frequent causes.

How to fix it

  1. Remove the cartridge and check for a pull-tab or tape strip still covering the gold contacts.
  2. Gently wipe both the cartridge contacts and the printer's internal contacts with a dry cloth.
  3. Reseat the cartridge firmly until it clicks.
  4. Restart the printer fully (power off, wait 30 seconds, power on).
  5. If using a refilled or third-party cartridge, check HP's compatibility list for that model.
Technician's tip

Third-party cartridges can trigger this error after an HP firmware update even if they worked fine before — that's a policy change, not a defect.
