Handling 'Toner Low' Errors on Canon imageCLASS Printers
imageCLASS laser printers track toner electronically via a chip on the cartridge, and that chip's estimate isn't always in sync with the toner that's physically left.
Symptoms to look for
Toner low or toner empty warning appears on the panel
Print quality still looks fine despite the warning
Warning appears again immediately after installing a new cartridge
What causes it
The toner chip estimates remaining life based on page count, not an actual level sensor, so warnings can appear early — particularly with cartridges refilled outside Canon's process.
How to fix it
Remove the cartridge and gently rock it side to side to redistribute toner.
Reseat it firmly and clear the warning from the panel menu if available.
Continue printing — most printers allow several dozen more pages after the first warning.
If quality visibly degrades (fading, streaks), replace the cartridge.
For refilled cartridges, confirm the chip was reset by the refill provider.
Technician's tip
A toner-low warning right after a fresh cartridge install almost always means a chip communication hiccup — reseat it before assuming the cartridge is faulty.
