Fixing 'Scanner Not Detected' on Canon All-in-Ones

This is almost always a driver or connection issue rather than a hardware failure in the scan unit itself.

Symptoms to look for

  • Scan software can't find the printer's scanner
  • Printer prints fine but scanning fails or times out
  • Scanner worked before an OS or driver update

What causes it

Outdated or missing scanner drivers (separate from print drivers), a printer connected via a different network profile than before, or a scan utility that lost its saved connection are common causes.

How to fix it

  1. Reinstall Canon's full driver package, which includes the scanner driver separately from the print driver.
  2. Confirm the printer and computer are on the same network (not one on WiFi, one on Ethernet).
  3. Restart both the printer and the computer after reinstalling drivers.
  4. Open Canon IJ Scan Utility and re-add the printer manually if it's missing.
  5. Test scanning directly from the printer's panel as well as from the computer.
Technician's tip

If scanning works from the printer's panel but not from your computer, the issue is 100% software/driver-side — no need to inspect the hardware.
