How to Fix Misaligned Prints on Canon Printers

Misalignment shows up most clearly on text and fine lines, and it's a quick software fix rather than a mechanical repair in nearly every case.

Symptoms to look for

  • Vertical lines appear doubled or blurry
  • Colors slightly offset from black text outlines
  • Issue appeared right after a cartridge replacement

What causes it

Print head alignment naturally drifts after a cartridge swap or after the printer is moved or jostled, since the head's physical position reference can shift slightly.

How to fix it

  1. Open your printer's utility software (Canon IJ Printer Assistant Tool or similar).
  2. Select 'Print Head Alignment' and load plain paper when prompted.
  3. Let the printer print and scan its own alignment test page — don't touch it mid-process.
  4. Repeat once more if blurriness is still visible.
  5. If alignment doesn't resolve it, run a nozzle check to rule out clogged nozzles instead.
Technician's tip

Always run alignment after any cartridge change, even if prints look fine at first — it prevents blur from creeping in over the next few jobs.
