Understanding and Resetting Brother Drum Unit Errors
The drum unit and toner cartridge are separate components on most Brother laser printers, and drum errors are often confused with toner errors even though the fix is different.
Symptoms to look for
Drum error or 'replace drum' message on the panel
Print quality shows repeating marks or spots at regular intervals
Message appears well before expected drum lifespan
What causes it
The drum unit has its own page-count-based life counter separate from toner; a counter that hasn't been reset after a genuine drum swap, or genuinely worn drum, are the two possibilities.
How to fix it
Check whether the drum unit was actually replaced recently or if it's the original unit.
If newly replaced, reset the drum counter through the printer's panel menu.
If not replaced, check the drum's rated page life against your printer's total page count.
Inspect prints for repeating marks spaced evenly apart — a telltale sign of physical drum wear.
Replace the drum unit if it's near or past its rated life and showing quality issues.
Technician's tip
Repeating marks spaced exactly the same distance apart on every page is the clearest sign of a genuinely worn drum, not a software error.
